Juan Gabriel was born Alberto Aguilera Valadez on January 7, 1950, in Parácuaro, Michoacán. His story was far from easy… his mother left him in a boarding school in Ciudad Juárez when he was little, and it was there that he found his inspiration for music.

As a child, he secretly wrote songs and dreamed of singing in front of thousands. What once seemed impossible eventually became reality.

Juan Gabriel’s Debut

Before becoming Juan Gabriel, his first stage name was Adán Luna. But it wasn’t until 1970, when he adopted the name that combined his father’s (Gabriel) and his mentor’s (Juan Contreras), that the world began to know him.

He officially debuted in 1971 with the album El Alma Joven. And the most famous song from the album is “No tengo dinero.”

That song, written when he had nothing, became an anthem. From that moment on, his career took off.

Who helped him?

It was Enrique Okamura, a music representative from RCA Víctor, who saw his immense potential. Also Silvia Ulloa, who helped him when Juan Gabriel was unjustly imprisoned for alleged robberies. From there, nothing stopped him

Genres Juan Gabriel sang.

Juan Gabriel never fit into a single label. He used to say that genre didn’t matter, only emotion did. His music went from mariachi to pop, from ballad to bolero. So, it was a little bit of everything.

He deeply admired José Alfredo Jiménez, and his muse and lifelong friend Rocío Dúrcal, with whom he recorded legendary duets.

An ending nobody expected

He died on August 28, 2016, in Santa Monica, California, from a heart attack. Just one day after performing in concert. He left no goodbye, no note. Only silence… and countless broken hearts.

Mexico came to a halt. Flowers, candles, mariachis… the whole country mourned his departure.

Who inspired him?

Juan Gabriel said that his greatest inspiration was life itself. Abandonment, love, betrayal, hope. Everything he lived, he turned into lyrics and music.

🌍 Why was he so beloved?

Because he sang with his heart.

He performed in the United States, Spain, Central and South America. He even sang at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a venue once closed to popular music. And not just once.

He was admired not only for his talent, but also for his courage, his dedication, and his way of loving music.

Juan Gabriel and the heart of Mexico

Just as Juan Gabriel carried the soul of our country onto international stages, at Mall Gran México Export we celebrate those who, through art, design, or craftsmanship, keep the Mexican essence alive.

Each of his songs, like every handcrafted leather bag or huarache, tells a story. A story of roots, identity, and emotion.

🔗 Other souls that inspire

Juan Gabriel didn’t just make history. He shaped a nation.

His legacy isn’t in the numbers: it lives in memories.

In his songs that helped heal.
